Will a external harddrive work without a internal hard drive in place on a dell

i have a dell inspiron e1505 l/t that the int harddrive went out and i had a used one installed and os loaded as wind xp originally it came with vista, now the harddrive has gone out again, what i would like to know is being this int hd is bad can i use a external harddrive instead and it work even tho the int is bad and use the vista restore disk that i have originally with it , or is it necessary to have the int hd working first?

Recovery disk (s) will look to restore OS on an internal drive.
