If your limit is $800 then you might have some trouble getting great graphics for upcoming games.
Are you willing to overclock your computer at all?

Hmm,

Motherboard - GA-P35-DS3L ($90)
CPU - E8400 ($200)
HDD - Seagate 7200.11 ($80)
Case - CM 690 ($85)
DVD - Any ($25-30)
Memory - 2 x 2GB ($80)
GPU - 8800GT 512 ($190)
PSU - Corsair 550 ($100)

Comes to $850 without an operating system. That's a solid setup though.

Boonality's choices are good, but cheaper is possible. Start there, but get a case for $40 and drop back to 2GB of RAM for $40; this gets down to $770, but still doesn't include the O/S, shipping, and (if applicable) government extortion. If you need to cut back more, you could drop back on the CPU, if only temporarily.
It would be useful to know what parts you already have. Monitor, keyboard, mouse? O/S?

Aside from Crysis, it will give every current game a thorough drubbing. Even Crysis on High should run fairly well depending on the resolution.

Yes, the dual core is faster than the Quad core I gave out and both would be fast computers, but we can help more if you give us info on what components you have already.

If you have a monitor is it CRT or LCD and if it is LCD what is its native resolution. Something like this can make a big difference in the components you choose. eg. If you have an LCD monitor that can only do 1024 x 768 resolution, your going to play crysis on high. But if you had a monitor that's got a native res of 1920x1200(not likely but we can all dream) then crysis is going to crawl.

Do you have a DVD rom or burner?
Mouse?
Keyboard?
Decent size case?
Decent PSU?

let us know and we can better use cost allowance you gave out :)

Hi there: I don't recommend an Intel for a build with a budget, but rather an AMD. That way you can get TWO 8800GT's instead of just one on the savings you get on the processor. Is it just me or does two 8800GT's and a 6400+ AMD slap an Intel + 1 8800GT in the face?

Here's my picks:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103767 - $109
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130168 - $79
2x 8800GT 512MB(downgradable to 256Mb version depends on what his native res. is): http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000048&Description=8800gt&name=Desktop+Graphics+%2f+Video+Cards - $400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231121 - 4GB for Vista - $86

DVD - Any $30

Planning to have your build to last then buy Vista OEM. Want to upgrade for life? buy the full retail version $100

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811166030 - comes with a bunch of fans cutting the cost of individual case fan purchases to zero $ 50

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148262 $65

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182067 $130

Total with 512MB GT's about $900 & total with 256MB GT's about $830

OOPS did I forget something? Did I go over your weak budget?

Also if you wanna do some researching find a good slower intel dual core and OC it to outperform the AMD dual core x2's. Never went that route here maybe someone else can recommend it.

Yes I believe AMD is the way to go. It's not like AMD is bad, it just isn't bleeding edge on speed. AMD build would be cheaper but to hell with SLI for him. It would increase motherboard cost as well. But definetly AMD build would be cheaper.
