Black but i can still see the mouse cursor; safe mode does nothing

Hello,

When I turn on my computer, I have the choice of starting windows normally of going onto the three safe mode choices. All the choices bring me to a black screen with a movable cursor, but nothing works except tapping shift five times to get the sticky keys option.

When I try to put the re installation discs in nothing happens.

What can I do?

What happened just prior to this happening? Also have your tried booting from the Vista CD?
