No display of operating system / no message/ black

I have a older dell laptop, recently, I was not able to open my favorites tool bar on firefox browser, so turned off cpu, restarted, it went thru bios, then while it was loading vista, took quite a long time,,after the lines finished, and was loaded, no dispay, nothing, just black, no blue screen, error message of any kind..was wondering if someone could help, let me know if operating system is gone, or do I have to reload vista?..thanks,
