Hi
I have an old CPU, Athlon 4000+ (single core), it was in socket 939 motherboard. My MB has broken down and i want to buy a new one.
Will s939 CPU fit in the new AM2+ motherboard? In AM2+ motherboard description it says all AMD type CPUs fits...
Or will i have to buy the old socket 939 motherboard for that CPU?

Thanks

Get one on ebay if your broke.

Word of advice ... check your graphics card is AGP or PCI-E first.

The 939's first came out on AGP then went to PCI-E.

Don't get one that your card won't fit !!

RAM didn't change through that era tho ... should be fine in that regard.

Are you sure it is just the mobo?

Ignore the cheeky teenager ...

Besides the CPU socket being different, the memory is too. Nearly all socket Am2 boards use DDR2. Your Socket 939 board uses standard DDR. There were a few AM2 boards which used either/or at first release, but I don't think there are many of them left around, if at all.

Not to nitpick, but AM2 processors/motherboards always use DDR2 (not standard DDR) as the memory controller (on A64 processors) is located on the CPU.
Asrock still offers Socket939 motherboards that can be upgraded with their AM2CPU card, but they are based on older ULi chipsets and the board retails for almost $40. That makes the combined price (of the motherboard and the AM2CPU card) a bit more than is reasonable.
