you should apply the thermal paste as the manufacturers state, it is usually more effective than spreading it out.

everyone should run a i7 920 at 4GHz

More Information

you should spread it evenly

i have done many tests and best way to apply thermal paste is to spread it as thin as possible acrros the entire surface
then put a small dab in the middle and spread it toward all sides

why?

the themal compound must work hard to move to a new surface that is why you spread it across the entire area - wetting!

you mound it in the middle so it can fill the voids and flow evenly - tested and proven!
