Hi all,

I don't know too much about computers so I'm asking here.

This is my curent setup
*AMD Athlon 64 3200+
*1024mb SDR 3200 ram 200Mhz(2 x 512mb)
*XFX 7900GTX Nvidia Graphics card 256mb
*70gb Hard drive (now full)

This is what I'm going to on the weekend
WesternDigital 500G SATAII 7200rpm HDD (16MB Cache) Enterprise Storage 1
Powersupply Antec ATX TruePower 650W TRio
Asus P5KC S775 QuadCore P35 FSB1333 DDR2+3 2xPCIEx16 SATA2 F/W.LAN ATX 1
Intel CORE 2 Q6600/2.4Ghz/2x4MB/1066FSB/LGA775
DDR2 2G PC2-8500 1066Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel(2x2G) CAS 5 GeiL
XFX GeForce 8800GT Xtreme 512MB DDR3(PV-T88P-YHE4)

I have a few questions I need answered

1. Do I need a new size case to fit this in? If so, what size?
2. Will I need additional cooling?
3. Is my choice of RAM correct for the motherboard
4. I want to keep my current hard drive and a 2nd drive. How do I set it up so I have a SATA drive as my primary and the IDE drive as my other drive??

Thanks!!

no expert here just a few observations, maybe others will chime in...??
why a new case if your current box works then the only reason for replacement would be 1,looks,2,kooling,3,$$$,.??
as for the ram,,my asus p5k se's manual does not list geil at all, although you might want to check the asus web site for the qvl [qualified vendors list] for your mobo..
now the why would you want to keep a 70g hdd, when you just got a 500g hdd??,,as you are going from amd to intel,,the boot of your 70g hdd will be useless..
what i would consider is formating the c:/ partition of the 70g [if it is partitioned??] then doing the install on the newly formated and partitioned 500g,,and then copying over whatever..personally a 70g hdd would be very small compared to the 500g,almost not worth keeping unless of course you have more than one ata type of hdd..
as for cooling that you will only find out when you get the q6600 etc up and running, i have a similar system, although my case is rather large, and the only problem is getting rid of the heat from the video, just looked at xfx selections, you may or may not want to consider either another fan somewhere in your case,,or even getting another case with better ventilation, the only way to find out is to go ahead and set it up and then you will see what is what..because you have specified 4g of ram, it is assumed that you are looking ,,maybe at vista?? otherwise xp will only see 3.5g of ram,,no big deal...in any event good luck & have phun...:)

dokk2 is right dont use your 70gb when you just got a 500. it will slow your system down. if you really need 4gb of ram you should get a 64bit os. other wise just stick with 2-3gb and 32bit os and you will be fine. if you get a new case i recommend the antec 300. its only 70 bucks and it should do a good job at keeping your system cool. maybe like add one 120mm fan on the front.

Hello, thanks for the reply.

The reason I wanted to keep the 70gog HDD is that I have about 20 gig on it that I need to keep. I wasn't planning on using it to run programs, just hold important data in case the 500 gig disk fails.
Will this still slow down my PC?

Many thanks!!

First, because ide/ata is really slow compared to sata 3.0gb./s and also setting something like that up is like hard if at all possible.

Second, like the other guy said, just put everything from the 70gb on to the 500gb.

Also, if you don't me saying so, don't buy that motherboard. Get like a 680i or somthing of that sort. And good luck!!!
