Partition and getting virus

if i make a partition for the purpose of placing all my downloads there and that partition gets a virus, will the other partitions be infected?

If both partitions are mounted read/write, why not?

A buddy of mine gave his daughter a VM with a disk that can be written to, but when it shuts down it reverts to its original image. He is a certified VMWARE consultant....
