Hello i was just looking at the sticker up the top of this section about the best gfx card for the money and it said the 8800gt wa better than the 9600gt
I know the 9600 was made after the 8800 right?
So i thought why wouldnt the newer card be better? Aren't they always?
Actually the 8800GT is an x8xx series, and the 9600 is a x6xx series. The second number being 8 or 9 is high end. 6 is mid, then 5, 4, down to the bottom. We would expect a 9800 series to beat a 8800 series, or a 9600 series to beat a 8600 series. But the 9600 series doesn't beat the 8800 Series. The 8600 Series didn't beat all the 7800 and 7900 series, but the 7600GT did manage to match the best 6800 series (6800U).

As Pauldh stated, the 9600GT is a mainstream or mid level video card. Generally that means it will not beat a current generation "lower" high-end card.
On the other hand, it will beat older generation "mid" high end cards like my X1900XT.
