I just wonder, do anyone think that i can use the HD 4870 (when it's released) in crossfire with a HD 3870. If it will support it, do i need a CrossfireX mobo, or can i use the standard Crossfire?

It'll definately have to be CrossfireX, as standard Crossfire only works on 2 of the same gpus. Not sure how well it'll do, 4870 isn't out yet.

Well, maybe...

I would have said no 6 months ago, but seeing the hybrid Xfire on the 780g makes me unsure. You usually need the cores to be the same (that's why 3850 and 3870 work together, the 3850 is basically an underclocked 3870), but I guess we will have to see once they come out. It's possible, but I wouldn't bank on it. Wait for the 48xx if you can and will be able to afford them ($200-300) or grab a 3870 and cross your fingers.

Okey, Thanks.. But if i want two 4870 in crossfire, do i still need CrossfireX or can i use the standard Crossfire? (I'm not so good at Crossfire/SLI things >.< )

Normal crossfire should still work with two identical cards, crossfireX is needed for 3/4 way crossfire and for mixed cards. Vista is also needed for crossfireX, it has something to do with the way drivers and DX10 work, it's somewhat different from dx9...

Hold on a second--when you say CrossFireX requires Vista, and mixed cards requires CrossFireX...does 3870 and 3850 count as mixed cards?

I have a 3870, and am running XPProSP2. My plan was to add a cheap 3850 and Crossfire them. Can I do that without Vista? Or would a 3870 and 3850 combo require CrossFireX, and thus require Vista?

Crossfire X will work with Windows XP Pro. ATI Hybrid CrossFireX is Vista only.

ATI Link - http://game.amd.com/us-en/crossfirex_hybrid.aspx

Quote from the page.

"How Is ATI CrossFireX™ Different From ATI Hybrid CrossFireX™?
ATI CrossFireX™ enables two or more discrete graphics processors to work together to improve system performance in both Windows® XP and Windows Vista®. ATI Hybrid CrossFireX™ specifically refers to the ability to boost system performance by allowing a discrete graphics processor and an integrated graphics processor to work simultaneously in a Windows Vista® environment.

1. ATI Hybrid CrossFireX™ Technology is only supported with Windows Vista® operating system, and is not available with Windows® XP operating system.

2. ATI Radeon™ HD 2400 supports only ATI Hybrid CrossFireX™ technology and ATI SurroundView™ technology."

Husky you can use your 3870 and your 3850 together if the MB will support crossfire using Windows XP Pro. Use driver 8.3 or better.

i thought you could only xfire 2 cards from the same series, like 3870x2 3870 & 3850 could all work together. so id would think u can only xfire 4xxx cards w/ 4xxx cards & not 3xxx cards. but i could be wrong.

I stand corrected
If I'm not mistaken again multi GPU (2+) crossfirex required vista at the launch because of the drivers. (was it like 8.1 or 8.2 drivers) They werent sure if they were going to make XP drivers at all but it looks like they have...

All tests were done in Vista x64, because CrossFireX is Vista-exclusive, and with a beta Catalyst 8.1 driver modded with CrossFireX support.

I am still thinking about if there any benefit on using CrossFire X with 4870 and 3870; coz the 2x Crossfire is just 1.5 times of single card and the performance difference between 4870 and 3870 would be almost 100%. So around double the power consumption with maximum 25% performance gain is not really attractive.

The formal news reported that the RV770 Pro (would be 4850) will be available on June-16-2008 that is 2 days before Nvidia GT200 series. The RV7700XT (would be 4870) will be July-2008. Not sure if they change the schedule again or not.
