Two problems:
1. I took my computer over to my friends house to update. he has uncapped cable internet. My computer wont hook up automatically like it used to. hes running a befsr41 router which is the dhcp. The other two computers are ok. But my computer wont hook-up to the network or the internet. The ip address it shows under ipconfig is: 169.254.173.244 with subnet of 255.255.0.0 They should run 192.168.1.1xx with subnet of 255.255.255.0
Now if it set a static ip, subnet, and gateway I can hook up to the network but still cant get internet.
I have tried the release, renew and get an 'arp cache failed to flush' type error.
I have tried the network wizard, uninstalled the nic card to no avail. Im at a loss for ideas.

2. I use netzero at home just to download email. the program will hook up and verify my login info and show connected, but drops the connection and dials the next number without me ever getting on the internet. If anyone has ideas on this one I would appreciate it. Netzero is no help unless you pay for it. I know im cheap but so what!

Running xp pro. I have tried starting almost every service in a vain attempt to get this fixed.
thanks for any help.

does this mean you can ping the router? Try arp -d * before renewing the IP. Also try repowering the router.

If I set a static ip to the nic I can ping the router and browse the network fine. I cant get an ip address from the router. Repowered the router 3 times no luck. the nic always reverts to the 169.254.173.244 address with the subnet of 255.255.0.0
tried arp -a no entries found.
tried arp -d * the specified entry was not found.

going to try a different nic and see what happens.

169.254 is the default IP address windows assigns if it can't get one from a DHCP server

Tried a different nic. windows couldnt even see it. Put another nic just like the one I had and got the same results. Using the router as the dhcp . The other computers 3 of them get assigned just fine, but I cant get mine to get off the 169.254 address.
tried starting all of my services that had anything to do with networking but no luck. Not sure what happened. Will try again next thursday, march 18. If no luck then I am going to do a clean install as a last resort. Still cant get the darn netzero to work right either.

I have deleted all of my profiles except one - default. Set all services to the default install settings. reinstalled nic, drives, modem drives, phone internet software. set explorer settings to default. Still not working. I guess i am going to have to do a reinstall. Talked to the computer gurus/ Network IT guys at work and they had no clue what it is. Will have computer here at my friends house tomorrow for one last final try.

Have you tried a static IP address of 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 with the DNS and gateway address' as 192.168.0.1?
