So heres the story and the problem. A couple of weeks ago my power supply and video card blew. bought new ones, Corsair 750W and Radeon HD 3850. Today i decided i might as well upgrade my cpu with it. Got the money and bought the 7200 core 2 duo. Come home to install it. I put it in set up the heat sink, put the power in and boot my computer. I get no display on my monitor and after about 10 seconds the computer shutsdown. So I think theres a problem. I put in my old processor, P4, and start it up. It loads and I go into the BIOS settings and it shutsdown. Now I have no idea whats wrong with it, I'm thinking overheating but im not sure. My old processor has been running for 5 years and as soon as i took it out it started to fail. Now I'm stuck with 2 loose processors and a dead computer.

My motherboard is an Asus P5GPL-X with a LGA775 socket. If anyone has any kind of solution that they can post to help me with, it would be really appreciated. I just dont want to spend 50-100 bucks at a computer repair store for something i can do myself in 20 minutes.

Re-check that all your hardware is connected. When upgrading its easy to knock a cable, ram, the video card out. Double check that everything is connected and wired up, Um come to think of it, I didnt look into your mobo but if thats the same mobo that has been running your old cpu for 5 years its not going to be able to run a e7200 or cd2.

I'm pretty sure the mobo doesn't support the E7200. It may have the same socket but it doesn't support it. You need to get another mobo.

your motherboard does not support that cpu. since your cpu is 45nm, you're going to need a new motherboard, and new ram...you can pick up a DFI P965S Dark motherboard for 80 bucks brand new or 55 open box, both with free shipping. with a bios upgrade from DFI's website, you'll be running that E7200 with no problems. as for ram, if you're not overclocking, you can get 2 gigs of ddr2 800 ram for like 40 to 50 dollars.

Your motherboard does not support the E7200, you will need a new one. Look at the Gigabyte EP35-DS3L as a "cheap" replacement.

EDIT: The (E)P35-DS3L uses the much nicer P35 chipset compared to the old and dead-end P965 chipset on the above motherboards.

^Second on the P35, it's a better chipset.

Blame Intel for making you buy a new mobo for every processor you buy. Blame AMD (or just Hector) for everything else.

Better for what? If you run crossfire, by all means get P45. If you run a single HD3850, by all means pay through the nose for a bigger number.

Upgrade when you need to. Any time that you upgrade your tech is only new for a month.
