Im going from a 8800 GTS 640 mb to one, just wanted to see what everyone else has who is thinking of moving to the 9900 and passed on the 9800 series and what kind of performance bump you think there will be from what you have now. I'm also upgrading to a E8600 and 780i Mb with the 9900 so I should see a big jump. Thanks for all your input.
I may, just depends on the 4870. I expect a doubling of my 8800 GTS
I might do a step up come sept, but i'm going with sli 8800 gt for now
I'd like to see if nvidia has a "gt/gts" style mainstream card in their new line up - I don't think I would bother with a 600$ monster like 9800gx2 if i can get 2x that will outperform it for less cost on 2 slots.
dual 600$ video arrays aren't really ideal to me either =S
edit:
speculation point : It /would/ be nice to see a high end single slot solution that did outperform the 8800 ultra/gtx in all scenarios though
9800gtx to the gtx260 hopefully. is it coming in july or june?
Yeah, I'm going from a 640 GTS to the 280 GTX (9900 GTX), should be nice, though I've have to wait till the end of the year though.
Depending on how much the nvidia cards and ati cards cost, and depending on how they perform, I may be getting a 9900gtx, or 280gtx, or whatever it will be called. But I may also be getting a 4870.
Upgrading from an x1950pro with 256mb of vram.
So yeah, I'm hoping for a pretty nice increase.
You said you were upgrading to the E8600 (3.33 Ghz right?) Any idea by what date this processor will be available. I have read that it will be priced same as the current E8500.
Soldier I thought you would have spent your money on more lighting for you rig

Q3 08 is all we know.
I'm going from a 3870x2 to a 4870 or 4870x2, but that won't happen until September or October. I might upgrade my CPU first.
I have a Gigabyte 780G mobo all ready to install, but will have to transfer my CPU because I can't afford a B3 Phenom right now. I'm looking at one of the 95 watt ones supported by my board.
Then I can consider a new GPU. The next line of Nvidia cards will be good, but I like AVIVO, which means I go AMD.
I think I'll be upgrading from my trusty 8800 GTS 640 which has proved to be excellent value - had since just after launch.
This time though, I'll be looking more at performance v cost rather than just raw performance, and which card can effectively run the best at 1920 x 1200 with some AA on. On early rumours, I'm leaning towards the ATI solution, and I haven't had an ATI since my 9800 Pro.
An X2 version would be nice, however I'm not going to dive in straight after launch, as there seems to be an absolute dearth of decent games out for the PC at present.
On the topic title, I wouldn't be certain at all that the GT200 will maintain the existing naming convention - I highly doubt it will be branded 9800GTX.
I'll be upgrading from a 8800GT, but do you guys think that I'll need a Quad core at 3Ghz + to run this card effectively?
I have 2 9800GTX's in SLI, and will either step up (via EVGA) with both to 2x260's or sell one and Step Up with the other to the 280. What do you guys think? (other than I was a tool for getting 9800GTX, I know that already!)
Opt for the GTX280. The 260s in SLI will be extremely hot and will likely consume vast amounts of Power.
Yeah I am leaning towards that choice. The other factor is that, though SLI has improved immensely since its introduction, and is probably more justifiable than ever, there are still issues (I'm dealing with an annoying ET:QW 9 series SLI bug that's capping me around 30FPS - lame!). I think migrating back to single card may be the way to go.
I'm stepping up my 9800GTX, if at all possible. I figure as long as I made one stupid decision in terms of GPU purchases I may as well compound it.
I had originally bought my mobo with the intent of doing SLI but it seems with a 1680x1050 monitor and a top-end graphics card there's little or no point.

Hmmmmnnnn i love my 8800GT...i'd upgrade maybe in December to prolly 4870X2 (or whichever fastest card avail out there for ~$250)
I'll be upgrading from a x800xt, lol so old.

I doubt the 4870x2 will be $250 by then. You might be able to find a 3870x2 for that price, or the better 4870. Next time around, I'm more likely to just get a 4870 and avoid issues with games that don't like Crossfire and act like I have a single GPU.

If you are speculating on a 9900 GX2 I wouldn't bother... From what Ive read ATM the 9900GX's core is too large to fit a second core onto the card.
Nvidia doesnt fit two cores on a PCB like ATI does, it just does a mini-sli with two cards to fit it in one slot. Two cores, Two PCBs.
Well ill be upgrading from *drumroll* a XFX 7600 GT... Anyway I'm hoping ATI pulls this off with a card that performs well and crossfires well, that way i can ditch nVidia's broken chipsets and go for an Intel chipset. Also If the 9900 GTX doesn't shut out 2x 8800 GTS G92s then I will go for 2 4870s most likely, the project price of the 9900 GTX is 550-700 as far as i can see, which is a bit steep.

Theres no chance the 4870 would be $250 by Dec...or ever... i might sell off my 8800GT and pay $250 more (max) for the new card.
9900GTX (to replace my 7900GTX) and Enermax 500watt ... is it possible?
I am upgrading my system, complete overhaul, as far as the video card goes though, I run a radeon sapphire 9600pro @ 576MHz overclocked it to get another year out of it.
I think I will get the 280 or maybe the 4870x2 if I decide to get that spider edition pc-p80R lian-li case for $700......still consider the retail mid tower though...ahhh decisions!
The line from "A Tale of Two Cities" really applies to upgrading, it's often the best of times and the worst of times at one and the same time. There's always something better at a slightly higher cost; but costs add up and a budget gaming system can become a mainstream gaming system becomes an enthusiast gaming system. It can add up easy.
Also, time frames for new parts can be dodgy. It's reasonable to wait till the release of 4870 and GTX260 in June to upgrade GPU's, it may not be reasonable to wait for Deneb or Nehalem, as they're a bit further off.
^ Thats why I'm not upgrading from a great video card like the 8800 GT, GTS G92, GTX, 9800 GTX, GX2, or 3870 X2, if you have one of those or more than one you don't need to spend $600-$700 on something that most likely will still not perform like a "Next generation" card should.
When i trash my Old X800 will be one fo two choices :
1 - Top End card ( like a 9900GTX ),
2 - Two Mid class GPUs.
Ill check bang/buck ratios, and decide. Any way, i wotn do it before this new series come up and be really tested, after all the hype is out.
It's doubtful for me I'll be replacing my SLI 8800GT setup. We shall have to see performance and pricing though from both green and red. Dual GTX260 someday if priced right is a possibility, but nothing more at this time.
I saw 4870 trying to fight 9800gtx... so that means 9900gtx will be better.
who knows.. but i am sure 9900gtx will be better
so yep i am going to buy that card.

What about PSU?
im just mad that i own the 9800gx2 ........... -_-
Since I'm already running SLI 8800GT's, I decided to skip the 9800 series entirely, because I am already hitting 18,900+ with my rig in 3dMark06.
I think I may just wait around until the Nvidia Geforce 10000GTX XT :Chuck Norris (makes you cry bloody tears) edition comes out.
Heres the specs(below);
8 Dual Core GPU's at 3Ghz( each)
with 4Gb of DDR10 video memory
built with a 10nm process
Requires 3000Watt powersupply (sold separately).
Single slot cooler design with a fan that spins at 5000 RPM's(Silently)
Has Wireless video output
PCI-Express ver. 20.0 (Operates at fiberoptic speeds)
and comes signed by Chuck Norris with a picture of him sweaty and covered in his enemies blood on the single slot cooler.

Actually ATI had said that the 4870 would be replacing the 3870 X2, meaning it must perform atleast slightly better than it and the 3870 X2 performs a good bit higher than a 9800 GTX... the question is not whether the 4870 is faster than the GTX280, thats not it's target, the GTX260 is and this is very possible. Also the 4870 X2 should be able to get damn close if not better than the GTX280, and I'm not even meantioning the price difference!
I have a GF 6800 Ultra. I will buy the new card if it can run Crysis's at 1920 1080 at highest settings. Well Ok maybe lower res than that, but it does have to be highest settings. I've been waiting a long time for the right card/game combination.
