Hey, everybody. I'm confused......I have two graphics cards and I'm not for certain which one to use.....what's the difference in performance, etc. Any pros and cons. I have a 8600GTS SSC nvidia 256MB DDR3 card and a 8600GT 1GB DDR2 card. Which is the better one? Thanks.

In general, the 8600gts is better than the 8600gt. I suppose if you use really high resolutions, the 8600gt might outperform the 8600gts.

But if your resolution is less than 1920X1200, then I think the 8600gts will be the better card for you. Especially since it is DDR3 and the 8600gt has DDR2.

I'm not completely sure, as I haven't seen any benchmarks, but that is what I would go with.

You can always try them both and do benchmarks yourself, and see which one performs better.

EDIT: I meant that I am sure that the 8600gts is better, but I'm not sure at what resolution or if there is a resolution where the 8600gt might be better because of the ram.

Yadge, I agree with you to a point. Crysis for instance has shown to run better on a larger amount of DDR2 than a smaller amount of DDR3 when using a 8600 at any res but those where both 8600GT in those tests. The higher clocks of the GTS model offset the memory gains.

Honestly if your running games that 'need' 512mb ram you probably shouldn't be using a 8600GT. Having one in my spare spare computer I should know.

Yeah, I haven't seen any specific benchmarks or anything, I was just going off of what I thought would be true. And really it just depends on the resolution and also the game that you'll be playing.

Honestly if your running games that 'need' 512mb ram you probably shouldn't be using a 8600GT.

That is also very true.

The GTS is more powerfull but will run out of texture memory faster.
The GT is slower but will run better at higher resolutions with AA turned up.

What games are you planing on running with these cards?

Hey, everybody. Thanks for the replies. I posted on other boards, and all I heard was DDR3 basically. You guys gave explanations. As far as games, I haven't played any in ages...well much......since I played Evercrack.....(aka Everquest) and got divorced because of it...lmao. Seriously.....but now i'm glad I did...lol. I am a recovering game addict...so now I have decided to stop going to GA (Gaming Anonymous) and become a gamer again. :D
What are some good games out there now? Also, I'll run some benchmarks...anybody recommend any good benchmarking programs? Also, I did read alot about overclocking the 8600GT, anybody know about this? Since I guess the 256 DDR3 is better, I'll overclock the 1GB until the verge of it catching on fire. I'll experiment with it until it blows up..lmao. Perhaps I can turn the 8600GT into a 8600GTS. I paid about $60 for a used eVGA 8600GTS 256mb and $85 for an Axle 8600GT 1gb.
Thanks again,
Kenny
