Hello,
i am trying to connect my laptop to my tv using HDMI but only the desktop backroung displays, please can you suggest somthing. i have windows vista on my laptop. thank you

You have extended desktop set up instead of mirroring, so the TV is seen as a second monitor and the display is extended onto it.

On the same screen where you adjust the resolution, you can click on the second display represented by the TV, and uncheck the "Extended desktop onto this display" box to set up mirroring instead.
