Unless they added fan controls, i will be disapointed. LOL. Like they ever will.

No fan controls. I have not had a chance to check it out yet. Fan controls would be nice.

I have an awesome visiontek 3870 OC. But the fans suck. I had a 3870 last fall. I was hoping they had fixed the fans.

just get atitool....

Reply to spuddyt

I just downloaded them for Vista. I'll let you guys know how they work once I take them for a test drive. I guess I updated to 8.4 the other day for no reason :P. Stalker is going to go back on the hard drive too for testing as per the 30% performance increase claimed by ATI.

@ San Pedro - 30% seriously? Let us know.

@spuddyt - you talkin to me? Will Atitool control the fans? Where do i get atitool? googe it? I thought atitool wasn't compatible with 38xx cards.

I had to use rivatuner to manually set my fan speed. It idles around 37 degrees C @ 50 or 60 % fan speed and I have it oc'ed to 860 on core

I think I'll just see if a Zalman VF-700ALCu will work on my 3870 and be done worrying about the fan.

8.5 seem to be pretty good drivers. I loaded STALKER and it was smooth with everything maxed. I forgot how bad the player models were, but the HDR lighting is pretty good. I also remembered why I wasn't so hot on that game (can't pause the game to use a different weapon).

Also, rivatuner will let you control fan settings. I use it in XP, but not Vista.

I installed the updated driver the day after AMD-ATI released, I really can't see any actual improvement since Catalyst 8.2, from Catalyst 8.2 to Catalyst 8.3 to 8.4 (except the Cross Fire X was added on 8.4) and to 8.5 just likely monthly routine. Maybe I would see the difference on different Catalyst versions when RV7700XT is available.

Reply to Crazy-PC

I installed it last night. I didn't notice any real difference.

I went from 8.3 to 8.5 and my performance increased slightly and it seemed to add stability (I played Madden 07 and BF 2142).

I'm cautious about drivers since the 8.3s murdered 3870x2 performance... anyone got an X2 and the 8.5s?

I gave my girlfriend my hd3850. I installed it with the cat 8.5 driver. Online playing UT2K4 it ran like poo. When I say poo I mean 2 - 3 fps. So I installed 8.3 and the system now gets 85 fps which is the max that the gaming server allows to public players. I have an hd3870 and have 8.2 installed. I have tried 7.11 to 8.4 and have found that I get the best 3dmark06 score with 8.2. I have not tried 8.5 yet with the my hd3870 card. After seeing what it did with the 3850 I think I'll wait to see what the next version will do.

just tried it in my new tv, wouldnt let me use 1080p but it was 1650x1050. my monitor is 1440x900 and i swear to god these have to be the best drivers. i used to lag when i looked places, when it would load the textures, but now its all sweet.

n higher res gaming works fine for me on my hd 3870.

great driver release tbh. best that ive had since the 8.2s

guys the 8.5s look pretty good for 3870 and 3650 owners. The 3870x2 might have some issues with this driver though. Its all here on tweaktown's monthly catalyst review/analysis (which seem to be getting worse over the course of time, high quality aa & af test is 3dmark06? wtf?):

If you have a 3850/3870 then i'd definetly give it a go.
