Weird. I wonder why he was landing with ordinance from a "training"
mission? *4* bombs?! If it's a training mission where you don't shoot,
wouldn't it make more sense to carry dummy loads? And if it's a shooting
mission, why did he still have them as he was landing?
The Harrier's a cool jet, though. I saw a show on them on Discovery or
History Channel showing how the flight controls work. There's a big
lever in the cockpit to control the angle of the engine exhaust duct
over about 120 degrees (straight back to slightly forward of down). When
hovering, some exhaust is ducted out through "puffer" ports at bow,
stern, and wing tips to provide attitude control.
I try to fly them in the Battlefield games (BF1942's Desert Combat Final
mod and the recent Battlefield2 demo) but still haven't got the hang of
the hover.

Because ground crews need training too, in realistic circumstances.
Besides the fact that you'd want your pilots feeling comfortable with
high explosives underneath their butts.

I think if a jet crashed in my backyard, threw the contents of a swimming
pool through my bedroom window, blew up, and the cannon ammo started
cooking off, I'd leave a yellow stain, too!

Most bombs and missiles have to be armed before they'll go boom, otherwise
the part that makes them explode is kept away from it. They do it for
reasons just like this. the ammunition however does not. Smack the primer
and it goes. (also, its 25mm, not .25. There's a huge difference)

The bombs *were* armed. What saved the day was the way
they landed- these particular bombs must hit nose-first to detonate,
and the 4 on the jet did not.
And okay, the ammo was 25mm. Sheesh, cut me some slack
when I'm stressed out!!
Read up on the newest bombs and ammo- it's a different world
out there since the Persian Gulf war.

So far, so good..........

Sometimes its hard to tell, because some people I've told my background
to, yet they still forget.

Some of the people that know me have been in the shop before and known me
for a long time, yet still forget.
