Hello,

I am hoping someone with a bit of experience would be able to answer a quick question. I just bought a new video card, and I am about to get a sound card (using onboard at the moment). I just want to make sure I dont need to buy a new PSU to cope with the increased load.

My specs:
Gigabyte 965P-DS3P motherboard
2.4ghz Core2Duo OC'ed at 3.00~ish ghz.
4x 1gig DDR2 ram
150gig 10000rpm Raptor
2x 750gig Seagates
A single dvd drive

and I've recently replaced my old (broken) video card with a 9800GX2 (just one)

Powered by an Antec Neo 550W PSU (http://www.antec.com/us/productDet [...] odID=28550)

This is working fine I think, both the power LED's on the 9800GX2 are coming up green, and gameplay is fine. Although I had to use a couple spare Molex thingos to make up the 8pin PCI-E connector. Infact they werent even spare, they are daisy-chained from my case fans. I made sure each molex used was from a different main connector going to the PSU.

And I'm about to buy a standard 7.1 Creative sound card, nothing too flash.

Can anyone see any problems with this setup? 550W is the very low end recommended in the documentation I got with the video card, but I think that's assuming a gruntier CPU. My video card is probably a little out of place in my system.

If I was to upgrade, any advice? If I was to pick up a second card for quad SLI in the future (unlikely), would a 850W PSU cut it? (eg http://www.antec.com/us/productDet [...] odID=27850 which I can get for $230 aus).

Thanks!

Well according to The Tech Report http://techreport.com/articles.x/14355/9

With just one 9800GX2 the 550w will suffice. Accroding to that same report it looks like 2 9800GX2's would be right at 550w for total system power consumption but I highly doubt that 550w would cut it. You should be able to easily get by with 700w, maybe even 650w, as long as the PSU supplies ample amps on the 12v rail.

In their test system they were running a C2D Xtreme X6800 at 2.93Ghz. Not sure how your CPU's power consumption compares. Of course, it all depends if I interpreted the review correctly and if it was itself correct.

You will be fine with 550 for 1 video card but if you do add a second video card you will need more power not as much as you would think but would need more. That power supply would be good for what you want to do. I do not know about what you can buy and pricing in AUS as i am in USA so i can not recommend anything else.

I appreciate the response.

I mainly wanted to make sure I wasnt already pushing the envelope with my current card/cpu/etc, which it seems I'm not!

Nah, from what I could find on Google.com, the 98000GX2 only tops out at around 200w at full load.
