I am trying to run my Q6600 at 3.0GHz

When torture testing with Prime95 CPUz shows the CPU Multiplier at x9 (set in the BIOS) but on idle it shows as x6. I understand that this is something that Intel have developed to conserve power and CPU life but can I turn it off? Would I want to turn it off?

My board is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P

cheers

Turn off Speedstep. Described here in the 'sticky' posted at the top of the CPU section.

Ah didn't see that, cheers buddy. I have done that now. Should I be worried about any potential risks from doing this?

No risks. I use speedstep on my systems. The function is the same as AMD's Cool and Quiet. No risks at all. However, you are drawing and potentially wasting more power and producing more heat by disabling Speedstep if for instance, you leave the system running at idle for long periods of time.

thanks a lot.

I was aware of a potential temperature increase because of more power being continuously supplied to the CPU, but to be honest my temps are really good so I think I will leave it disabled.
