Are you using 32bit OS? That plus a 1gb vram graphics card should give such results.

Yeah, I`ve try a Vista 64bit with 8gb and was ok, but some programs and plugins don`t work well. So I change to 32bit. When I put one of 2gb appear 2gb but 2x2gb together appear 2.5gb.

That can't be helped. There is no real way around the 32bit OS I/O addressing limit. What programs don't work with 64bit Vista? I use it, and haven't ran across any.

That`s because I work with music and design. Some sound cards has no drives to Vista 64 yet and some plugins to photoshop & etc don`t work.

If total is 2.5 Gigs out of 4 it seams a little low, I would think 3 ->3.2 would be more appropriate with your system config. Have 4 gigs installed, show 3.4 with 2.7 currently avail for programs. This w/XP Pro, Vista should be slightly less.

That's for a typical machine with 256/512mb vram video card and few components. Since he has a 1gb vram video card, and probably lots of components and recording devices attached, it sounds about right. They all take up addresses.

He identified a 8600gt, but not which one - 256, 512, or 1 G, or what additional cards are installed. I have 256 GPU, Tv tunner card, 2 pairs of raid 0 HDD's and two dvd writers.

As too 64 bit operating system: Remember the vast majority on this forum are gamers and vista64 is great. Sometimes it is not just hardware problems, which for the most part have been solved; Sometime it is performance issues. He has a dual-quad core workstation ($8K), 30 in monitor plus a 22 in monitor. He does high end streaming video hardware/software design for HIS company. He tried vista 64, took it off as it was approx 25% slower do to "bloat" coding.
