I'm using an EVGA 9800 GX2. When I first got it, it gave me the option in the taskbar of switching between Performance mode and EnergySaver mode. It wouldn't let me switch, though, so I downloaded the newest driver off nVidia's website. Now it doesn't give me that option at all; there is no icon in my taskbar. Does anyone know how to get it back?
Also, I can change the GPU mode from single GPU to multi-GPU in the nVidia control panel. Will using the option that says single GPU (to power 2 displays) instead of multi-GPU save any power? I notice it doesn't seem to reduce the temp of either GPU, so I'm thinking its not helping much.
I would just like to be able to pop it into EnergySaver mode when I browse the internet instead of playing games, or on the rare occasion that I leave it on overnight. I'm not extremely concerned about power (obviously, or I wouldn't have bought a PC that requires 750W PSU), but I'd like to have the option of saving a little bit of electricity.
To save power, i think you need to have it on a new Nvidia board with built in graphics( NForce 780a). It could then switch to the onboard when you are in windows and pump up to the 9800 GT2 for games.
The single/multi gpu mode may be not functional since they are built to run as 1 card.
The drivers are new for the 9800gx2's so maybe there is a power saving feature coming in the future(toms did not get the NForce 780a to do its hybrid power thing yet), but don't quote me on it
I have a nForce 780i mobo. I just find it odd that it would give me the option in my taskbar to switch between the two if my Mobo didn't support it.... and then the icon would disappear after the driver update.
They have a habit of release drivers before they are ready. Thats my guess as to why it was there.
They once had an option from the 7900GTX on the drivers(they are unified anyway) for the 8800GTX and in the release notes stated that the option would do nothing because it was intended for the 7900GTX.
