Well, you have powered it on and off with enough different combinations of RAM, HDs, surge protector, etc. I would suggest breaking the system down to the basics and trying to power off and on. Unplug everything except the CPU/HSF, 1 DIMM RAM and videocard. If the systems fails to power off and on with the basics, or is powering on randomly like you described, I would suspect the motherboard. I would RMA the MB at that point and not spend another minute trying to troubleshoot it and make it work.

Mine does the same thing: the main power connector on the mobo seems to have a loose contact. If the cable shifts to the "wrong" position, the power cuts out. Just jiggle it when it acts up, and it will behave itself.
hey thanx for the responces after pulling everything out of the case and powering on the mobo alone i finally figured it out! it was my power supply. i grabed my 500 and powered on the board 100 times with no problems! then i took the 1200 gigabit odin witch btw was brand new and was powering on an older mother board without any issues. im thinking maybe the mother board is bad and keeps tripping like it cant handle the wattage. so anyway i buy a 1200w coolmax so far my pc has done about 20 boots with everything hooked up no problems. i called asus and they were saying that the ps was not compatible??????? strange but it worked! seems funny a cheaper ps works lol!
