Printer Install Issue

Hello,
I have tried for several days to install my HP 7960 Photosmart printer. It was on this computer before I re-installed the OS (twice now. I have tried the disc, the download, the plug and play and all of them freeze up, I have left it "running" for 7 hours with still no advance. I get no error message. I have had no problem installing all my other software including PS CS4. It seems that my processor usage has been up to 100% at times.
I have ran tests on the processor (PC Doctor) and they all come back normal

Sometimes we assume a person has naturally done certain things that just go with a new install, but I ask about them anyway.Did you install all the motherboard drivers? (The chipset drivers being most important).
it was a 10 disc reinstall for Compaq PC..I would assume
everything else including HP scanner installed with no problem
