Hi. I am planning to build a gaming PC and I was wondering if 2GB RAM or 4GB RAM would make much of a difference.

Remember you need a 64 bit OS.

Depends can your motherboard support 2x2GB sticks? if so then i would say yes.  4gb really not that much more expensive then 2x1GB sticks and games are only going to requrie more memory.  However you not likely to see a big difference gaming now.

Corsair  did some benchmarks and showed some good benefit in some games.   While this was a self serving exercise, I think there is definitely some benefit.   The cost is quite low.   Even with a 32 bit os, you will see about 3.4gb which is a heck of a big percentage increase over 2.0gb.

Correct.
No need for a 64-bit OS for the Extra RAM to help.

If you're going the Vista route, I think you'd be crazy not to just go ahead and get the 4 GB. Should you upgrade to a 64 bit OS down the road, you'd be getting a "free" memory upgrade of sorts once the last GB is fully utilized by your OS.

Go for 4GB for sure. To use all 4GB, you'll need a 64bit OS (XP 64bit or Vista 64bit) as mentioned above. However, even if you have 32bit Vista, that 3GB+ that is useable is still better than 2GB.

At some point, be it tomorrow, next week, or next year, you'll be glad you had the whole 4GB as software demands more memory.

i think there is a fix by using one file from the windows server 2008 and patching in Vista to utilize the 4gb of ram.

No!
64 bit OS recognizes the whole 4GB RAM but 32 bit OS recognzies 3.2 or 3.5GB of 4GB RAM installed, so it isn't a must to do it,aslo i have 4GB RAM and i had XP 64 then i went to XP 32 and i didn't see a single difference.

why is everyone saying 64 bit Vista/XP... LINUX 64 bit is 100% free including shipping, you can run windows programs with Wine, and you can go like me and dual boot it with 32 bit XP.

The more I read the forums, the more I feel that a number of individuals would be well served by skipping their next GPU purchase in favor of a little "Stress relief" from the local 'Working Girls'"
