I have my 3870 updated to Catalyst 8.5 was found with problem on HD watching, especially the HDTV; the CPU utilization for HD was over 50% which shown that no GPU Encoding worked for the HDTV. After installed the hotfix that released on May-21-2008 for Catalyst 8.5, the HD movie and HDTV was OK again, the CPU utilization become lower than 15%. The review by AMD is just too narrow as just 3 to 4 game benchmark is incomplete but I still keep my Catalyst 8.5 since it doesn't show any side effect for overall performance now.
Just download the display driver and then use AtiTrayTools to replace the control center.
At least there's that option, which isn't available to most others.
I have been doing it this way for a while now, i find that AtiTrayTools gives me much more in depth controll over my settings, which in turn gives me better performance than would be the case tith the control center.
