My Samsung 1tb sata drive stopped booting to windows. I installed a new WD 1tb w/Vista OS in sata1 and plugged the Samsung into sata2. I can see/open the samsung drive but not the bootable partition where my applications and files are. Any suggestions.

Run checkdsk on the partition.

- Open an command window (DOS Window)
- chkdsk X: /r /f

A SATA drive is never a Master or Slave. Those terms only apply to IDE channels, which can handle two devices per port and hence need to identify them. However, a SATA drive quite often is the Boot Drive.

Feel Better? My malfunctioning drive is connected to sata2 and while I can see the drive and its file partition, I cannot read the partition that contains the OS, apps and unfortunately many of my files. Any useful suggestions for solving this problem?

I have not had to do this, so I'm not going to tell you how, 'cause I could get it wrong and your data is irreplaceable! I will suggest places to look yourself and see if they give you solutions.
1. Check what you can do with the /fixmbr switch on chkdsk. I have a suspicion your Samsung has a problem with the data recorded in its Partition Table and / or Master Boot Record.
2. Look for postings here about tools for Partition Recovery. I'm pretty sure Somejoe7777, as well as others, have outlined what they can do, and when to use them, and how to use them safely.

Your original samsung drive just stopped booting into windows. Chances are that the drive itself is buggered. Since you can see the samsung drive in Windows installed on the WD drive but can not read the data in the partition, that seems to confirm that the drive is buggered. You can try running chkdsk to see if it will repair any bad sectors, but your only real option might be to use recovery utilities to retrieve the data from the samsung drive.

Check out www.runtime.org specifically check out GetDataBack for NTFS. This is good software capable of recovery data from buggered drives. You can dl GetDataBack as a trial version to try it out to see if it will in fact recover your data, if it will then you must buy a license to actually enable the recovery portion. At least you can try it before you but it and at least it won't cost you anything but your time to see if it works.

IF the samsung drive is under warranty see if you can get it replaced.

I only trust WD drives...never had any luck with Seagate, IBM, Hitachi, Samsung, or the old Maxtors.

Have you checked the Samsung site to see if they have any HD testing and repair tools? I now Seagate does for their drives - which is my preferred HD vendor.
