A 2600 Pro really couldn't run it at a higher resolution than that? Or is the OP just CPU-bound?

I'd recommend overclocking that Sempron a little bit, if you feel comfortable doing so...

Also, is this a socket 754 or 939 system? If it's a 939, you might be able to use an Athlon 64 X2.

Back when i had my socket-A athlon 3000+ and one gig of ddr-400 ram i bought a 7600gs when they first came out..and it played Oblivion ok on low setting's 1024x768.I later upgraded to a 7600gt gddr3 and it played on medium to high setting's at 1024x768.

If i where you i would get the 7600gt gddr3 and put a VF900 on it and overclock it!

get a new cpu first. ur cpu is really going to limit ur new graphics card purchase. get a athlon x2, then buy a ati 3850 agp card. it wont cost u alot, unless ur powersupply cant handle about 18Amps.

u could overclock it, but why spend money on a cooler to overclock it? just upgrade to a x2 or overclock it for free w/o cooler. anyways a 3850 would be good

The link does give accurate results, I just ran it on my system, and it got a number of system parameters wrong on the analysis, including video ram, cpu speed, directx version, etc.

Hmm you might be able to get 1024*768...i really dont think it could go higher. Your cpu will hold you back....as other have suggested, get a cheap dual core....the 2600xt would be better too.

people here obviously dont know what theyre talking about :/

My roommate was playing oblivion with an old 3200+ and a 7600gt @ 1280x1024 with medium-low settings.

now of course you wont be playing with much eye candy, but oblivion will run just fine with a 2600, but yes it would be a lot wiser to go with a 3850 AGP.

Well for a decent amount of $ you could go with this setup, which will last you much longer than your current one:
* CPU - $62 shipped! Not the fastest, but good starting point!
Intel Celeron E1400 Allendale 2.0GHz 512KB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail

* Mobo - $98 shipped! One of the best budget p35 based mobo's out there. OC's really well!
GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Memory - $50 - $20 MIR = $30!! Not the fastest stuff, but the $ it's a good buy!
Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

* GPU - $137 - $30 MIR = $107!!! Hard to beat at this price. Will blow the 2600pro out of the water!!
EVGA 384-P3-N851-AR GeForce 8800 GS 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

Total ~$339 - $50 MIR's = $289!! The 2600pro AGP is going for about $80-90, a s939 x2 for $100-150 you'd be at about $180-$240. You could even stick with AMD and get a AM2 mobo with CPU for about $20-50 cheaper than the Intel setup above, but that would be up to you.

From experience the HD2600 will do better than alot of people are letting on here, and from experience it does fine on medium @ 1280x1024 or will normal mix of medium and high (mostly high) with low grass, stays in the 25fps range for 1024x768, and HDR comes at a minimal penalty hit.

But that being said, I think you've come to the right conslusion, with a system upgrade, and the GF8800GT is a much better card than the GF8800GS. Your Sempron probably runs way slower than my mobile T7300 CPU.

AGP cards are overpriced, and your future remains limited with them. The GF8800GT is a solid card that should last you for a while.

agreed, if you are going to spend any money on the current machine you are better off upgrading the whole thing and going pci-e video card.

If you are getting that 2600 for nothing then OC'ing the proc might gain you enough to play the game... but that is again not spending any scratch on it otherwise your money is better spent upgrading at your current specs.

Yeah. That site is garbage. It told me I couldn't run Crysis because I don't have 640mb of videoram....I have an 8800GTS 512, which is in every way superior to the GTS 640. It's funny.

[:mousemonkey:2] careful about the "in every way" idea... logically you could quantify an argument that would allow the gts 640 to win. Easily (and most obviously) enough is a test that stresses buffer size over all else.

not saying anything beyond that, just that "in every way" is quite border-less and could mean a great many things. ;)

Missed this reply, you could just add SSC and then suddenly the GTS-640 is back in the running. ;)

Sweet, then definitely the GF8800GT gives you great power now and into the future.

And if you're saving money from elsewhere in not having to upgrade the rest of your PC, then my recommendation would be to get a GF8800GTS-512.
While it's more card that you need at this moment, when you do finally upgrade it'll be nice then, and right now there are some selling for around $200 just a bit more than their GT counterparts, but should give you more longevity for the future and give you a higher resale value if you swap in the future.

Although that being said you could also wait for the next gen to launch in 2 weeks, which will likely do two things A) Kill the prices of older models, B) give you a glimpse at what the hardware targets are for develpoers over the next 12-18 months.
