I just purchased a Windows 7 Hp desktop-was that a good purchase. Will I still be able to run newer documents e-mail, word etc?

No, Windows 7 desktops are horribly outdated. To be up to date you need a dedicated Linux desktop. A dedicated Linux desktop must have special card reader for Linux credit cards - with a penguin on top ;)
 
Windows 7 is Microsoft's newest operating system, so you have no worries about it being up to date. But Windows 7 itself doesn't include a full-fledged word processor or e-mail application, so you'll have to add those on to it.

For a word processor you can buy a copy of Microsoft Office, or you can download and install the free Open Office suite from: http://www.openoffice.org/

For e-mail, you can use Microsoft's Windows Live Mail from: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail Another alternative is the open-source Thunderbird (by Mozilla, the makers of the Firefox web browser) from: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
