going ATI does not mean you can't go INTEL. Still, I have had my hopes up twice for ATI and twice they let me down. I finally went green and I don't regret it. If there is anything your GX2s can't do, sue the developers, they can't be on their right mind.
Whoa, that's an expensive build. I'd replace the mobo with an eVGA 780i and the RAM with some good DDR2-800 and the cooler with a Xigmatek HDT-S1283. The performance will suffer very little, if at all, and you'll save about $600.
Edit: the rest of the list is nice. Maybe the hard disks are a bit too expensive, but they're good. I'd get WD6400AAKS for $115/640GB or WD7500AAKS for $130/750GB instead of Barracuda for $250/1TB. They're just as fast and you get more space for your dollar.

I think your needs for DDR3 are overrated. DDR2 performs almost as well for much less cost. Get a DDR2 board, and some 1066 RAM, save yourself a load of cash. I guarantee that you wouldn't be able to tell 2 identical systems side by side, one with DDR3 and one with DDR2. DDR3 concept is good, just very overpriced for the actual performance gains...which are negligible. Check Tom's; they did a comparison a while back on DDR2 vs DDR3...

with that extra 600 dollars get yourself a decent CPU. Seeing as your budget is fairly elastic, go for a QX9650, Q9450 or a E8500 and overclock the heck out of it.
If your interested I have 2 evga 9800gx2's for sale, I recently purchased these about 2 months ago. The are in perfect condition I can send you pics if you like, I have posted them for sale on craig's list but have not gotten any serious buyers yet only no shows. I will be posting it on ebay soon if I am not able to sell it. I am asking $375.00 per and $750.00 for both. Price is non negotiable. Thanks, please respond to mqd100psu@gmail.com.
$1200 just in the 2x9800GX2s...I would say its possible, although, not the best use of this cash. If you still want to spend that much on a PC, go with a QX9xxx instead of the Q6600. Also, as we mentioned before, go DDR2 on your board and RAM if at all possible. DDR3 is a total waste of cash. ($600 alone on 8gb of DDR3???) $750 on HD's? $330 on MB? I'm starting to get the idea here...

If I hit the Powerball tomorrow (tough, as I didn't buy a ticket), I'm not sure I could spend more than about $2K on a new build.
I'll have to go along with Rubix et al on the parts.

$3,200 system and your using that CPU?!?! At least use a new 45 nm. Please done waste your money on that old Q6600. I agree with whoever above, for $3200 you could build 2 bad ass pc's that would have a little less performance then his. O well, we all have our budgets....
