I have a sata as primary and I just put in an ide WD 160gig drive. I took the white sqare thing from the back off and the HDD is detected during boot but when everything is loaded I don't see it on my computer. Why is this happening?

By white square thing...are you referring to the jumper ?(the small plastic piece that covers 2 pins on the cack)

Try putting the jumper on the CS (cable select pins).

I tried it again with the jumper on slave configuration as it says on pic of HDD but same thing: it detects it on boot but hte icon is not there in my computer. Can HDD be ruined if they have a weak power supply? My father used it once but his comp is super old and maybe he ruined hdd somehow cuz he tried it with a weak power supply? what could make a hard drive be detected on boot but not have icon show up on my computer?

Please list your specs or computer model. I doubt that a weak power supply on the other computer affected it.

E8400, HD 4850, 4 GB RAM, 600W power supply, Asus P5Q PRO mobo.
