I was performing a vista system restore from Sony disks. The process errored out and now neither the Sony restore disks nor any Windows XP / Vista can see the hard disk. I have reformatted it to NTFS and XT3 using various boot disks. But still no joy,

Unbuntu and mint detect and install just fine though..... any ideas?

Set the drives to ide mode. Make sure the drive is set up right in the bios unhook all other unnecessary stuff like usb drives and what not.

Be sure it's detected in the bios.
If you don't enable it in bios... some os or apps can detect it but it's not the case in Windows.

If he is correctly detected, try "Control Panel" "Adminstrator tools" -> mmc and find disk manager.
( BECARFULLLLLLLLL... this could scrap your partition!)

You could need to activate the partition in some case.
