Can I use my sata laptop hdd on a new gaming pc

laptop died, I would like to use the sata hdd temporarily with win vista on a new pc build just in terms of getting up and running til i upgrade both the hdd->ssd and then vista->win 7, was wondering what probs i'll have, and if i'll be able to install OS from the hdd or recovery disk

No. Windows will just BSOD at boot if you try. It would also be a violation of the Windows EULA. You'll have to bite the bullet and buy Windows 7 at full retail price.

The Operating system on your laptop is tied specifically to that laptop.

You can always use a Linux version. Try Ubuntu.
