About a week away from pulling the trigger on a mean gaming machine I'm going to build.

However, I would first like to know the differences between the Intel P45 and X48 Chipsets.

Several people have suggested I get an X38 or X48 chipset.

I will prolly buy one of these two motherboards. Tell me if I'll regret getting the cheaper one. What is the diff?

Asus P5Q Deluxe Motherboard - P45 Chipset - $209.99

Asus Rampage Formula Motherboard - X48 Chipset - $289.99

Thanks in advance for the info...

PS - They have open box copies of each board for around $70 cheaper than the price listed here... Is that a good or bad idea??

P45 = 1 x PCIE 2.0 16x Crossfire 8 x 8
X48 = 2 x PCIE 2.0 16x Crossfire 16 x 16

P45 = 1 x LAN
X48 = 2 x LAN

P45 = adequate passive cooling
X48 = enhanced passive cooling

P45 = Non (ROP) edition
X48 = ROP edition (Republic Of Gamers) Enhanced BIOS options, enthusiasts oriented.

These are the basic differences. Newegg sells 'returned' Open Box MBs as 'OEM'. I don't understand the basis or reasoning for that approach. Open Box MBs come with the MB olnly, no cables, manuals, etc. Read carefully what you are getting. Save yourself a headache and buy a new retail box.

I would consider this to be the best priced cutting edge technology MB if you are buying the P45/X48 chipset. Same specs as the Rampage Formula minus the dual LAN.

If you felt you needed 16Gb RAM that might be an argument for P45.

Price is an argument for P45, as is power management.

Casual overclockers might find the P45 easier and more stable.

BIOS, at least in the ASUS, needs to mature more on P45s. x48 is a decently mature chipset.
