Laptop turning off

I have a 2008 acer. When I turn it on it boots up but when the computer is suppose to show the welcome sign it shows a black screen and a cursor and after 15 seconds it justs shuts down. It has windows vista.

Overheating, software, hard drive, problem. - sounds like overheating.
