Hi I was thinking to upgrade my 4000+ and X3 Phenom comes into my eyes. However my motherboard socket was AM2 and I would like to ask how large will the CPU's performance drop by putting X3 into AM2 socket? Will it a better idea to use 6000+ or 6400+ ? My motherboard is Gigabyte M61PM-S2
Since I want the new CPU capable to fully utilize the ATI HD4850, Please recommend what should I do with my system please.

Thank you for the suggestions. i noticed that the spec of 6400+ and 6000+ are almost the same except 6400+ has 0.2G mhz clock speed more. Does the 0.2G difference really worth the money?

By the way, according to AMD's website they have a new 6000+ at 65nm 89W and stock core speed at 3.1 G mhz. Would it be a better choice?

Definitely go with less than 125w (95w or less)

The 65w Brisbanes (X2 5000s and up) will pretty much hit 3GHz+ at stock volts with a little tweakin'. Gigabyte mobo BIOSs feature super-secret undercover tweaking advanced options that will be enabled if you press "Ctrl+F1" at the BIOS main page.
(People have been killed for that information  )

If you don't want to work in the BIOS, the Gigabyte EasyTune OC tool will normally get you a painless 10-15% OC.

The X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8GHz 65w is $87 and a rather simple OC to 3-3.1GHz at stock volts. Stock speed will work well if you don't care to OC. The extra cash can go toward that HD4850 or another 2gb of ram.

If you plan to game at 16x12 (and sometimes a little lower) another 200MHz will not make any difference.

Well one thing that you may notice is that the Athlon 64 X2 6400+
is the older Windsor rather than the lower power newer Brisbane models.
Thise Windsor's have 2X1 MB of L2 cache rather than 2 X 512K of L2 cache.
Since you have opted for the newer AMD/ATI video cards I assume that you will be gaming on that PC in which you desire good performance for the buck.
You could save some money with the X2 6000+ but get the Windsor version while they are available. If it were me I would go with the 6400+ but the 6000+ is not a bad choice either.
