CAN'T VIEW PRIMARY PARTITION ZD7000 PAVILLION 2.5" IDE

MY HP PAVILLIN ZD7000 NOTEBOOK PC NO LONGER FIRES UP DUE TO A BACK AC JACK. I REMOVED THE HARD DISK (HITACHI TELSTAR 2.5" IDE PATA) AND I AM USING A USB ADAPTOR TO VIEW ON MY PC RUNNING VISTA. I CAN ONLY VIEW THE RECOVERY PARTITION AND DON'T EVEN SEE THE PRIMARY WHERE I NEED TO GET MY DATA. HELP
