I had to reload WinXP Pro SP3. For some reason my usb wireless adapter is not receiving an ip address from the router. dns is active on the router. when i manually inserted an address, the same one that had worked before, wireless security becomes disabled and i still cannot access the internet. the adapter uses Ralink RT2780 drivers which were installed from the cd that came with the device. network connection shows the device is enabled but continually shows acquiring network address. did i miss something in set up?

Solution
Try installing the latest software for the USB Wireless Adapter from the manufacturers website.

If Windows XP Pro SP3 detects your USB Wireless Adapter, you should be able to disable the software from the CD you installed and let Windows take over.

To do this go to Network Connections (Where you can see your Wireless Network Connection / Local Area Connection

Right click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
Select Wireless Networks Tab
Enable the checkbox "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings"
Click OK

I've done all of that but still no go. Uninstalled the drivers, rebooted the router beaucoup times (my ISP puked so I rebooted a couple times to make sure it was them) and tried both the WPA2 and preshared passwords. Nada, nothing, zilch. XP sees about a dozen wireless networks in my area but they're all secured.

Direct connect over ethernet / Cat5 works fine. Now, none of my wireless units will connect. Passwords, WPA2, TKIP/AES, all match back to router. Here's what Windows7 Network Diagnostics reported:

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device back on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or access point that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.
Reset the wireless adapter Completed
