I've pretty much been following the rumors and "news" as closely as I can. And I'm just wondering if I have this right. (at least according to the most recent rumors)
1.The 4870 will launch on June 16th, but not be availiable in quantity until later sometime this summer.
2.The 4870 will cost $300 at launch, but due to the limited avaliability will likely cost more.
3.The 4870 should perform somewhere between the 3870X2 and the 9800GX2.
I'm just wondering because I'm definitely getting either the 4850 or the 4870 this summer. I really would like a dual slot cooling solution, because I'd just rather have the better cooling. I wouldn't mind getting "only" the performance of the 4850, but isn't it supposed to be a one slot cooler? I'm willing to spend $300, maybe a little more, but not too much more.
I guess they will probably have dual slot cooler versions of the 4850 sometime after launch. How long do you think it will be until this cards start appearing?
Also, is 512mb of video memory starting to become not enough? I am also getting a new 24" monitor, and I do plan on playing my games at 1920X1200. With the newer games, and with more eyecandy such as antialiasing and stuff on, will the 512 start to be not quite good enough?
Even if the answer is no, I really don't think I would be willing to spend the extra money for the GTX260 or GTX280. Although I may spend more on a 1Gb version of a 4870 or 4850. Although again, I do not know how long it will be until these versions are out.
I'm hoping to buy as soon as possible, but early July would be good.
So anyway, thanks for any input.
