I get 2 messages
1. The software for drivers is up to date
2. "This devise cannot start".
Now what do I do?
I am trying to figure out why the microphone
does not work on my Dell Vista.

1. Have a Windows restore point back to when there was no problem ? Save all personal folders/files and restore.

2. Installed any new software that could have changed the driver , including Windows Update ? You could try rolling back the driver to previous version.

Skype FINALLY gave me a message - can't detect your sound card.
Upon further investigation, guess what, Dell Vista does not have
a sound card. So controllers aren't the point. I can buy a USB microphone which should take care of the problem.
