My office has a dedicated PC that act's as a server. The "server" has app's such as Office 2003 and Quickbooks that are accessed by 2 satellite PC's. The 2 satellite PC's are hardwired to a 1GBps Switch, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082). The server as well as the 2 satellite PC's only have 100MBps NIC cards. The issue is with the satellite pc's; It seems to take a long time to open app's that are installed on the "Server". If I install 1GBps NIC cards in the "Server" as well as the 2 satellite PC's will the time to open the app's installed on the server decrease? Server and PC's are running XP Pro SP3.

I think it would be better to add the 1Gbps nic to the server as that would be your bottleneck. This should increase the maximum throughput from your server to your two computers which have 100Mbps nics. Although this will not be the same if you want to share between the other two computers on the switch.

I'll give an example:
Server(100Mbps) streaming to both computers(100Mbps) at the same time will be about lets say 30-40Mbps for throughput.
Server(1Gbps) streaming to both computers(100Mbps) at the same time will be about 60-70Mbps for maximum throughput.

All of this also depends on the speed of your server. If you have a slow beast you will probably still be waiting a while(mainly processor and hard drive). You could also put in those two 1Gbps nics into your other computers if you have the time and money which won't hurt either. I would test by putting in the 1Gbps nic for the server first and see if that speeds things up.

Yep, doing it all tomorrow! 3 new GB NIC's. Saint "Nick", perhaps? Thanks for your input. I'll report back.
