ok so i have an overclocked 8800 gs. 680/1725/1000.
i turned the fan down recently to listen to my new cpu fan and when i started graphics intensive program like atitool or 3dmark, i hear a faint high pitched whine emmitting from my gpu. its not the fan though because i turned it down and have it set at a specific speed.
what is this noise and is it bad?

customisbetter did you turn the fan back up afterwards and try that,I would also check the temp on the gpu to see if it is getting to hot.

what PSU do you have? my old x1900xtx used to make that noise sometimes. It's the voltage regulators giving off an electronic "Vibration" sorta. I heard it can happen if it is not getting enough power and sometimes it just happens.

Speaking of noise, my new PSU sounds like a mini boiler room:| lol

i have an ultra 600 watt witha single 36 amp rail. i don't think its any lack of power. i just wanted to know if its a bad thing.
and my temps are quite acceptable, they never go above 65 even overclocked.

It could be, I mean when I set even my GX2 to 10% fan speed, I hear nothing except my CPU fan.

I'd read Jay2tall's advice, it could be lack of power. Try switching 6 pins:)

You can always try and reseat the card and replug the PCI-E cord in the card.

Your PSU should be plenty.

My old x1900xtx had the same noise, it wasnt THAT loud but annoying. I think it just went away one day.

i reseated the hs today and put some as5 on it. they loaded the chip with a probably a whole tube of thermal compound. i turned the fan up as well and it still has the whine when stressing 3d. idk. it doesnt look like its dying though.
how should i hook up the sixpin? should i have the molexs on the same cable or does it matter?

Wait you are using a Molex to 6 pin adapter? does your PSU have a 6 pin already? If not does the 6 pin adapter have 1 or 2 inputs for the molex?

You need to get yourself one of these:

Maybe not from there but somewhere. That might give it the proper juice.
