Amendment of Windows File Names

Hello,
I need to make changes to a lot of file names that means replacing a substring with another substring throughout. This works with REN at the CMD prompt, provided both substrings are the same number of chars.
Is there a way to do a global amendment where the substrings are a different length ?

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Are you simply renaming files or entire paths? I suspect there is no blanket way of changing filenames to anything other than the same name for every file you batch together.
