I have a MSI k7n2 delta2 Plat motherboard. My original msi fan on my chipset stopped working and I purchased a new cooler. My question is how do you remove the original heatsink ? It acts like its spring loaded and turns.

Thanks

Can you post a photo? There are many ways chipset coolers are attached. One very common way is via a thermal pad, which is a special type of sticky foam tape (this can't be reused). Other ways are via bolts, springs, clips, etc.

There are two plastic pins with a spring to allow tension. Remove the Mobo from the case and look at the bottom. Squeeze the V shape on the bottom so you can push it out of the hole. If it's an absolute pain to get them out (it happens) just cut them off with a pair or flush wire cutters.

Thank you I'm just going to cut them so I don't have to take the motherboard out.

Astro, you WILL have to take the mobo out no matter what to mount the new cooler. How else will you be able to mount the new cooler on through the mounting holes?

I just did one of these and learned a little. To remove the fan housing/heatsink it is indeed necessary to remove the motherboard to get access to the two springy clips/plugs mentioned above. However, it is not necessary to remove the housing to remove the fan. Here's how: Disconnect (unplug) the wires from the fan at the mobo. Remove the two very small philips-head screws on the face (upper-surface) of the housing and the face will come off. The fan is held inside the housing by three somewhat-larger philips-head screws which, when removed, will free the fan for replacement (or lubricating). Hope it helps.
