Windows corrupted font

My buddy's hard drive got corrupted so I took it out and plugged it into one of my old comps, in this case a Gateway 838GM. Ran checkdisk which fixed the drive, then shut off the comp to take it out, put it back in my buddy's comp, good as new. Only problem is, once I booted up the old Gateway, this is what greeted me!

I've never seen anything like this! It's impossible to troubleshoot because I can barely navigate anywhere! Every character is scrambled, and I get the same results when I try to type things. Any ideas?

Man, that's messed up!

My best guess is to start in safe mode and try a restore point rollback. If you can't even type characters, it seems to be the only thing I can see you can do.
