It should not matter if your have a first ('gold'), second (w/SP1), or third
(w/SP2) generation disk. You should be able to validate it as long as it's
not a pirated copy. If it is, you may want to consider making it legal.

Open Internet Explorer click onTools then Manage Add Ons find Windows
Genuine Advantage active x control and disable it!

Close down IE and open it again and all will be working again!!

If your mate used an illegal version and/or product key that would explain
your problem. It will help to legitimize your setup. To do that purchase a
retail version of Windows XP Pro and do a Repair Install. It is fairly
painless (except on the pocket book) but all your currently installed apps
and settings should be retained. You will then be able to download from the
Windows Update Site and other MS sites that require Genuine Product
Authentication.

First you have to download the Windows Genuine Advantage (otherwise, how can
you disable it?) and then go to Tools/INTERNET OPTIONS/PROGRAMS/Manage Add
Ons and disable Windows Genuine Advantage; close IE for it to take affect
and then open it and go to Windows Updates for your updates.

If it doesn't take, try it again until it does.

Is "activation" for winxp still needed? Considering that m$
wants to place spyware onto our system as what I read is that
the verification will check ALL the hardware & ALL the software
on my system to determine legitimacy.

Why the need to check ALL the hardware & ALL the software? I surely
don't want m$ to check any passwords on my system as part of the
verification!

They can't check hardware for legitimacy and they aren't concerned about
third party software they are just trying to take care of their own
software. As for passwords CoolWebSearch will collect your passwords from
you.

No. M$ is now giving away XP for free.
