Which would be the better card the ATI HD3870 or the 8800GT

8800GT, although I'd suggest you wait a couple weeks for the HD4850.

The 8800gt will provide more fps in games, I like the hdmi w/sound ouput from the 3870 though. I use it to watch alot of hulu.com on my tv.

8800GT 512-256 is better that HD3870

HD3870 about the same as 9600gt 512-256

It was pretty well established at release of the 3870 HD that the 8800GT had it beat by about 25% to 30%.

However another thing to consider are the improved drivers for the 3870 HD that have come out since then. I doubt they have closed the gap by that much, but I am willing to speculate that it brought the performance difference to between 10 to 15% in favor of the 8800 GT. Considering price the 3870 is a better deal. Also the DX 10.1 support is pretty important too.

from what I heard the 4850 is about 25-30% faster than the 8800 GT
