OVERCLOCKING AMD 9950 BE HELP!!!

Ive just gone out and bought an AMD 9950 BE Processor (140w) and an asus M3A78 motherboard.
I have been having problems overlclocking using the stock cooler. Using the bios i increased the clock multiplier to 14 which would mean the cpu would run at 2.8ghz. The other settings were set to auto.

When attempting to play games there were non stop problems ie crashing, speeded up gameplay.. things when playing games didnt work.

Cutting a long story short i reverted the multiplier back to x13 giving me the bog standard 2.6ghz and the games obviously run fine then!!

Using amd overdrive i increased all 4 cores multipliers to x14 and did not change any other settings...

All games work fine without any problems whasoever!!!!!!!!

Why is this? Anything i have done wrong with the bios settings?!?!

Im also concerned that the chip will overheat as it says the max operating temp for the chip is 64c. running my cmp oc'ed at 2.8 fully loaded the chip gets to about 60...

Again any help is appreciated... shall i stick with overdrive?!!?

thanks alot

Dave

Dave list your full specs Please.

First of all you'll need to manually set your DDR2 memory Slot Voltage and Timings manually, or you'll never get a good OC, with the 9950BE

I've got a 9950 125W version, but I still have stock HS and voltage. My recomendations would be to set the FSB at 225 and the multiplier at 13.5x. This should put you at 3.08GHz and still work at any settings. If not, try lowering the FSB until it becomes stable again.

Does that not push the cpu up to 64 degrees? Mine is the 140w version so should be hotter i reckon?!?!

I just done understand why when you change the clock multiplier in the bios the games wont work.

Then when you manually change the cpu frequency in amd overdrive it works fine.....

weird!!

AMD Overdrive is likely tweaking other settings.

Using AMD overdrive ive now managed to get a stable overclock of 2.8 ghz having set the cpu voltage to 1.25v.

It wont allow me to adjust the voltage in the bios settings for some reason.. just gives increments of 50, 100 etc etc

Im happy with that until i get a decent coole

thanks for your help

Maybe you guys can give me a hand then, i'm running a Phenom 9950 BE, M3N72-D, 8gb's DDR2@800mhz, GTX260, RAID 0 of 2 160gb hdd's and a 500gb in the back for storage.

I've managed to clock mine up to 2.9ghz, with just the multiplier, leaving the rest on auto. Now, i just recently came across the voltages and what not...But my cpu is sucking the 1.3v max already?

maybe i should take it off auto, but its telling me i'm runnin 1.3v @2.9ghz....and i'm sure people have hit 3.2ghz+ at that voltage with that chip....Any Suggestions?

To be honest im using the stock cooler and running at 2839mhz which is running at 56 degrees fully loaded. The ht speed is set at 202 with a 14x multiplier. voltage is set at 1.25v and is solid as a rock in amd overdrive. The next bump up is to 2.9 for me however it was getting hot at 60 degrees. that was running with a ht speed of 200 and multiplier of 14.5...voltage took a bump p to 1.3125...

What are you using to measure your temps, i mean do u have probes set up or are you using Overdrive's system monitor?

hello mate

im just using amd overdrive... ive tried speedfan which gave the same readings...

any ideas?!?

Personally i would spend $30 and get a new fan/HS. i have the same cpu and im OC to 3.0GHz and i run 45 deg fully loaded and around 32 deg idle. i got to 3.0 by 14.5 multiplier and 207 FSB with 1.375v.

It could just be that your processor won't work good with a x13 multiplier. Remember when overclocking it's always a crap shoot.

these CPU's are stock at 13x multiplier.

Found out some other information on my 9950BE...the voltage it's set to right now, for some reason, is 1.4v, AND, it's still unstable past the 14.5x multiplier. I don't understand...i just put a V8 on it...inside a HAF 932 case with all the fans still working...And for some reason it's still giving me grief when i try to turn the multiplier up...Should i set the voltage to 1.3 manually and start bringing the multiplier up?

Do u have ACC set to auto in your BIOS? I have close to the same mobo as u (M3A78-T). It reads Advanced Clocking Calibration where u set the Cool N Quiet and all that stuff. just make sure thats set to Auto.
And what are your temps now that u have the new HS?
March 27, 2009 2:44:43 PM

my cpu wont pass 47 under load. Hence why i want to push it farther.

as for ACC...i haven't run into that setting in the bios as of yet...but i'll keep digging.
March 30, 2009 2:50:39 AM

Dont have the ACC option in my bios...

Still wondering if i should manually set the Vcore to 1.3 and the multi up to 15x and keep testing?
