Hello, it is really hot and humid where I am and would just like some reassurance that things will be okay, and maybe some tips to cool it down.

I have an 8800gts 320mb that is currently idling at 76 degrees Celsius. It has a stock heatsink and fan.
It has an 80mm fan blowing down onto it.

My hard drives are sitting at 40 degrees and my Am2 5200+ windsor is idling at 33. The GPU seems extraordinarily hot compared to everything else.

What can I do to cool this thing down?

Download this, raise your fan speeds. Also, have you cleaned your card and rig out lately? Get some compressed air, and clean the dust out if you havnt.Heres the link http://www.evga.com/articles/405.asp

And really 76C is nothing.

Those chips often run 80-100+C when in the GTX and Ultras.

Sure you always want it colder if you can, but if JDJ's recommendations about the fans and cleaning doesn't help, then I'd say don't worry about it too much it's not like it's insanely hot in comparison.

But he said idling at 76, so it'll probably get pretty high under load.

But yeah just try increasing fan speend and clearing dust. I don't know why it would be so much higher then your other components other than excess dust.

A few years ago, the chaps over at driverheaven asked Sir Eric Demers, an ATI's engineer, about heat on GPUs.

"I posed the temperature question to one of ATIs top engineers Eric "sireric" Demers, this is what he had to say.

"At over 100C or so at the die temperature, thermal issues and possibilities of permanent damage start being important (I would strive to keep it below 100C). Certainly by 125C, permanent damage will occur. Below, that, life expectancy is shortened with higher temperature, but you should be fine for a few years.

We test our boards up to 55C ambient temperature, and at that temperature, all of them work fine. Most computers have much lower ambient temperature, and the associated die temperature should be fine, except if there is a fan failure."

I'm going to make a habit of quoting that whenever the heat issue comes up :)

Still, I'm not too sure about the "but you should be fine for a few years" bit! Heh...

are you guys talking farenheit or celcius? 20 celcius = 73 farenheit which is room temperature. 73 celcius = 163 farenheit at which you can cook a turkey for 6 hours or boil water in 12 minutes.

Dude, when talking about GPU temps we all use celcius.
At least you didnt say Kelvin

The "C" should make that obvious. [:thegreatgrapeape:2]

And 73C won't BOIL water, that occurs at 100C, maybe aide evaporation, but not boil unless you're approaching a vacuum. [:thegreatgrapeape:5]
