When I turn on my newly built computer it long beeps once, then waits ~10 seconds, beeps again, and keeps repeating. The fans start spinning, but I don't get any display out of it (I'm using DVI - HDMI cable). I tried making sure all plugs were properly seated and all, but its still doing it. I couldn't find anything about what a single long beep code meant. Any suggestions? I'm getting so close!

Specs:

Q6700
780i
9800GX2
750W PSU

Have you tried reseating the memory?

Check your manual for the beep codes and what they mean. Try removing all rum, leaving only one in. If that dosen't work start unpluging components and than pluging one at a time and trying to run. We need more detail specs.

Yeah, I was going to say, make sure all the rum is gone before you power up.

There is ALWAYS a drone. Exactly where, or how many drones you will encounter may vary, but that there will be at least one will not.

Yes, I did try reseating the RAM.

The error code 7F in the book says "POST error check - Check POST error and display them and ask for user intervention." I really have no idea what that means...?

I was searching around a bit and I saw some people say it was because their power supply was not compatible with their video card. The PSU I got was:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817341011

I know it says "Crossfire Edition", and I'm using an nVidia card, so could that be a problem? I figured the Crossfire Edition was just an advertisement basically. I thought 750W is 750W, right? In this build:

http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 795-5.html

there is an nVidia card and the same PSU, except it isn't crossfire edition. Could that be the problem?

EDIT:

I should also mention that I see two plug outlets on my 9800GX2. One is a 6pin, the other is an 8pin. I only have the 6pin plugged in since I don't think I have another free 8pin connector. That's not a problem is it?

And my full specs:

Q6700
HyperTX2 CPU cooler
780i
9800GX2
1x 10,000 RPM HD
1x 7,200 RPM HD
DVD burner
750W PSU
4gb RAM (4 sticks)

I think thats it...

You will need an adapter to plug in the 8 pin connector.

thats your problem there everything needs to be plug in or you under power get the adapter and it will solve your problem.

Ok, thanks alot. I looked around at some pics of a 9800gx2 install and both the 6pin and 8pin connectors and indeed plugged in. I find it hard to believe that the power supply would only come with one 8pin connector (the one i'm using for CPU), but I guess thats how it is...

When you guys say adapter, do you mean from a 4-prong molex connector to a 8pin connector? Or from a 6pin PCI-E adapter to 8pin? (not familiar with this)

SUCCESS! I did have an 8pin PCI-E cable, it was just set up at a 6pin PCI-E plug plus a 2pin plug hanging off of it. Kind of a odd setup, but it worked well. Thanks alot guys.

Hi guys,
just for the record a single beep when you start up is normal. It indicates that the motherboard is gone through POST.

When a computer is first turned on, or rebooted, its BIOS performs a power-on self test (POST) to test the system’s hardware, checking to make sure that all of the system’s hardware components are working properly.
