More about disappearing hard drives
  1. Are these brand new hard drives that have never been Partitioned, Formatted, or used? Every new hard drive needs a two-step process of Partitioning and Formatting before Windows can recognize it and use it. If you have not done this yet, let us know. There are several easy ways to do this, including handy software utilities that may have come with brand new hard drives.
  2. ...to expand on Paperdoc's comments, you need to use the Disk Managment utility to partition and format. Click Start, right-click on "Computer" and select "Manage" from the pop-up menu.

In the Computer Management window, use the left pane to navigate to "Storage -> Disk Management", then right-click on the drives listed in the right pane for options.
